Growing up as the eldest son in Karachi, Pakistan's vibrant city often dubbed the "City of Lights," I was surrounded by a diverse blend of cultures and communities living harmoniously. This unique environment shaped my worldview from a young age, instilling in me a deep appreciation for unity amidst diversity. However, my journey was far from smooth; at the age of 10, my family moved to Lahore, the "City of Gardens," marking the beginning of a new chapter filled with both challenges and growth.
As a child, I struggled academically, labeled as a below-average student and the slowest writer in class. I was often unable to complete my exams or assignments on time, a constant source of frustration for my teachers and parents that also made me feel isolated and fearful. Despite the disheartening remarks, I refused to let these obstacles define me. By the time I reached matriculation, I was determined to turn things around. Through relentless effort, I improved my writing speed and academic performance, eventually scoring well enough to earn a scholarship at Punjab College.
The next two years at Punjab College were crucial in shaping my future aspirations. My heart was set on pursuing MBBS, a childhood dream that I nurtured with unwavering dedication. After completing my intermediate studies, I embarked on the rigorous journey of preparing for the Medical and Dental College Admission Test (MDCAT). Yet, my dream seemed to slip through my fingers when I couldn't secure a spot in a medical college. It felt like the castle of my dreams was crumbling before my eyes.
Despite the disappointment, I refused to give up. I gathered the scattered pieces of my shattered dream and resolved to try again. With renewed determination, I threw myself into preparation, convinced that persistence would pay off. However, my second attempt ended in yet another setback, leaving me at a crossroads, grappling with the heavy burden of unfulfilled aspirations. It was the most disheartening period of my life, but amid the despair, a small voice inside reminded me to keep faith—perhaps a different path awaited me.
After exploring various options, I enrolled in the Pharm-D program at the University of Management and Technology. It was during this time that my father mentioned the UGRAD program, a scholarship opportunity that I initially overlooked. It wasn’t until a year later, when a close friend suggested we apply together, that I decided to give it a shot. We completed our applications, and then life moved on. I had almost forgotten about it when, during a practical exam, I received a call that would change everything—my interview with the United States Educational Foundation in Pakistan (USEFP) was scheduled.
Walking into that interview room, I carried with me the lessons of my past struggles, the prayers of my mother, and the unwavering encouragement of my father. After what felt like an eternity of waiting and hoping, I received an email confirming my selection as a Principal Candidate for the Spring 2025 batch of the Global UGRAD program. That moment of joy was unlike anything I had ever experienced—a mix of disbelief, gratitude, and bliss.
Throughout this journey, my father's motivation and trust were my anchors. His belief in me was a driving force behind every step I took. I am now on the cusp of a new adventure, eager to explore a new country, engage with diverse cultures, and broaden my knowledge. I look forward to making lifelong connections and creating memories with my mates that I will cherish forever.
I also owe a great deal of gratitude to Usman Bhai and the Global Scholarship Network for their invaluable support. Their guidance and mentorship were instrumental in navigating each step of the application process.
