Eligibility Criteria:  

To be eligible for the Matsumae International Foundation Fellowship 2026, applicants must meet the following criteria:  

  • Must be a non-Japanese national.  

  • Hold a PhD degree in a relevant field (Natural Science, Engineering, or Medicine).  

  • Under 49 years of age.  

  • Must have received an invitation letter from a Japanese host institution.  

  • Proficiency in English or Japanese (language skills should be sufficient for conducting research).  

  • No prior experience staying or working in Japan.  

  • Applicants must be employed in their home country at the time of application.  

  • Commitment to returning to their home country after the fellowship to contribute to its development.  

Fellowship Coverage:  

The Matsumae International Foundation Fellowship offers the following benefits to successful applicants:  

  • Monthly allowance: JPY 220,000 for living and research activities.  

  • Arrival fund: JPY 120,000 for initial expenses.  

  • Airfare: Round-trip economy class ticket provided.  

  • Travel insurance: Medical treatment and death benefits included during the fellowship period.
