Applications Open for KEK Summer Student Program 2025 in Japan 

The KEK Summer Student Program 2025 is now accepting applications! KEK (High Energy Accelerator Research Organization) is one of the world’s leading accelerator science research laboratories based in Japan, dedicated to advancing science through education and training. This fully funded research program offers undergraduate and graduate students the chance to conduct groundbreaking research at KEK’s Tsukuba or J-PARC campuses. 

Program Overview:    The SOKENDAI KEK Tsukuba/J-PARC Summer Student Program allows students to participate in cutting-edge research in various fields, including: 

  • Elementary Particle Physics 

  • Nuclear Physics 

  • Material & Life Science 

  • Accelerator Science 

  • Advanced Detection Systems (Sensors, Electronics, Computing) 

  • Theory (Computational Methods in Quantum Field Theory) 

Students can select a research project based on their academic background, gaining hands-on experience that will enhance their future research careers. 

Program Duration and Location: 

  • Duration: 8 weeks (from mid-June to mid-August 2025) 

  • Location: KEK’s Tsukuba or Tokai campuses in Japan 

Research Areas: 

  • Tokai Campus: Focuses on particle and nuclear physics, material and life sciences, and the latest accelerator technologies, exploring the beginning of the universe and hidden matter. 

  • Tsukuba Campus: Specializes in Belle II studies for new physics, exploring cutting-edge advancements in particle physics. 

Students will work on their research projects in a collaborative environment under the guidance of expert researchers.

Eligibility Criteria: 

  • Applicants should be in the latter half of their undergraduate studies or early graduate/Master’s course. 

  • PhD students are not eligible. 

  • Open to both national and international students. 

How to Apply: 

  1. Register on the official KEK website to obtain an ID number. 

  2. Email your application documents to: kekssp-app[at]ml.post.kek.jp with the subject: “[KEKSSP Application, ID=assigned ID number]”. 

  3. Required documents:  

    • CV 

    • Passport 

    • Official academic transcript 

    • Application form 

    • Recommendation letter from a university supervisor (sent directly to KEK by the supervisor)

  • The final application deadline is March 3, 2025.
